When the sun turned to place itself stronger and more enduringly in the sky each day, after months in which its maximum height diminished over the horizon, was, for all cultures, the moment when light triumphed over darkness, heat over cold, life over death. Sol Invictus, the sun that overcomes shadows and brings knowledge and wisdom, remains a powerful example and myth to remind us of the winter solstice. In the ancient mosaic as in the contemporary one, light and darkness are spirits, in a contrast that draws new combinations - technical and aesthetical - of which Stefano Mazzotti knows how to make good use, methodologically making use of traditional syntaxes, tying himself to enigma and myth.
